When I began my fashion photography journey this year, I had no idea what was in store for me. I had no idea how much I would come to enjoy the process — working with a creative team towards one goal and seeing that vision come to life. Before my internship at PATTERN Magazine, all I had ever known was the photography that college had exposed me too. Namely, fine art and conceptual photography. While that realm of photography holds a special place in my heart still, it was good to branch out and learn new things. After my internship with PATTERN was cut short due to Covid-19, my appetite to learn more about the fashion industry remained strong.

PATTERN had given me a foot in the door, but I still felt underprepared to take the necessary steps to launch my career forward. I was a little fish in big waters with lots of questions rolling around in my head and no outlet for them. That’s why I’m grateful for having met Chantal Dominique. I met Chantal during my time with PATTERN, having interviewed her for a People of PATTERN feature for the online magazine. Chantal was someone I clicked with instantly. We were both recently out of college, her a little older than I and more experienced. I wanted to know how she had found success so early and how to navigate the fashion industry in Indy. When she offered me an internship, I knew I had to say yes.

Apprenticing under Chantal after my premature departure from PATTERN was a godsend. Everything still felt too new and I needed that one-on-one mentorship to ask about all the little things that still weren’t clicking for me. As part of the internship process, Chantal asked me to direct several editorials and submit them for publication. The first one I did was ‘RADIANT’, an editorial that later was published in PUMP Magazine’s Editor’s Choice Issue. Chantal’s encouragement really propelled me forward: her confidence in my work and ability to get recognized. Oftentimes I critique my own work so heavily that I lack the confidence to put it out in the world. I’m so glad to be able to share this body of work. Although it’s not perfect (whose first attempt at something is ever perfect?) it is work I am truly proud of. Special thanks to Chantal, and my team of creatives that made this work possible.

Check out Chantal’s work here.

To say 2020 has been a rollercoaster of a year is an understatement. But with the low lows, there have also been many highs. I am grateful for how my career has taken off despite being in the middle of a pandemic and civil unrest. I have high hopes for the future and what’s to come. For now, please enjoy this body of work and keep an eye out for more to come!
